Rain driving tips

tips-rain-driving

1. Routinely check your tires…

Always check your tires before you hit the road. Make sure you do the following routine maintenance:
Keep your tires properly inflated. The correct air pressure for your tires is specified by the vehicle manufacturer and can be found on the vehicle door edge, door-post, and glove box door or fuel door. It is also listed in the owner's manual. The number listed on the side of the tire is not the recommended air pressure for your tire – it is the maximum air pressure for the tire. You should check your tire's air pressure at least once a month.
Check the tires tread depth. Proper tread depth will help prevent skids and aquaplaning.

2. Slow down.

As rain falls, it mixes with grime and oil on the road creating slick conditions perfect for skids. The best way to avoid skidding is to slow down. Driving at a slower pace allows more of the tire's tread to make contact with the road, which leads to better traction.

3. Know how to recover from a skid.

Skids can happen even to the most cautious drivers. If your car does skid, remember not to slam on the brakes. Do not pump the brakes if you have an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Instead, apply firm, steady pressure to the brakes and steer the car in the direction of the skid.

4. Keep your distance from the car ahead.

Wet-weather driving demands gentle use of all the main controls – steering, clutch, brake and accelerator – and a larger allowance for errors and emergencies. When you begin a journey in rain, your shoes will be wet and can easily slip off the pedals. Scuff the soles on the rubber matting or carpeting of the car before you start the engine. All motorists should regularly check that their headlights, rear lights, brake lights and turn indicators are working properly. It takes about three times longer to break on wet roads than on dry roads. Since more distance is required to brake, it is important not to tailgate. Keep a little more than two car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you.

5. Drive in the tracks of a car ahead of you.

Avoid using your brakes. Whenever possible, slow down by taking your foot off the accelerator.Turn your headlights on, even in a light rain. Not only do they help you see the road, but they'll help other drivers see you. If your car has daytime running lights, you should turn them on, so vehicles behind you can see you better.

6. Prepare for your journey.

Wet-weather driving demands gentle use of all the main controls – steering, clutch, brake and accelerator – and a larger allowance for errors and emergencies. When you begin a journey in rain, your shoes will be wet and liable to slip off the pedals. Scuff the soles on the rubber matting or carpeting of the car before you start the engine. All motorists should regularly check that their headlights, rear lights, brake lights and turn indicators are working properly.

7. Learn how to avoid and deal with aquaplaning.

Aquaplaning happens when the water in front of your tires builds up faster than your car's weight can push it out of the way. The water pressure causes your car to rise up and slide on a thin layer of water between your tires and the road. At this point, your car can be completely out of contact with the road, and you are in danger of skidding or drifting out of your lane, or even off the road. To avoid aquaplaning, keep your tires properly inflated, ensure that the tread non skid is above the legal limits on your tires and replace them when necessary, slow down when roads are wet, and stay away from puddles. Try to drive in the tire tracks left by the cars in front of you. If you find yourself Aquaplaning, do not brake or turn suddenly. This could throw your car into a skid. Ease your foot off the accelerator until the car slows and you can feel the road again. If you need to brake, do so gently with light pumping actions. If your car has ABS, then brake normally; the car's computer will mimic a pumping action, when necessary.

8. If the rain becomes too heavy, stop!

Heavy rain can overload the wiper blades, allowing an almost continuous sheet of water to flow over the screen. When visibility is so limited that the edges of the road or other vehicles cannot be seen at a safe distance, it is time to pull over and wait for the rain to ease up. It is best to stop at rest areas or other protected areas. If the roadside is your only option, pull off as far as possible and wait until the storm passes. Keep your headlights on and turn on your hazard warning lights to alert other drivers.

9. First rains make the road very slippery.

The first rains always make the roads the most difficult to drive on, as the mud and oil on the dry road combines with the water and forms a rather slippery layer. Drivers are likely to experience reduced control, and are cautioned to be extra careful for the first half-hour after it begins to rain.

10. Cloudy weather reduces visibility.

Use extra caution when passing other vehicles.

11. Dry your brakes after driving through standing water.

If you have driven through standing water deep enough to get your brake shoes wet, apply the brakes lightly to dry them.

12. Don't drive while fatigued.

Stop at least every couple of hours or every hundred miles to rest.

Woolies and Coles in world's top 20

The owners of Australia's dominant supermarket chains are fighting for supremacy among the world's largest retailers after Wesfarmers joined rival Woolworths in the world's top 20.
Coles owner Wesfarmers charged into 18th position from 21st and is growing quicker than Woolworths, which is up one place to 17th, according to the 2013 Global Powers of Retailing Report by accounting firm Deloitte.
The two companies achieved more than $US50 billion ($A47.54 billion) each in revenue at home and in New Zealand, compared to others in the top 20 who derived income from stores located in at least 10 countries.
Despite difficult global economic conditions, the world's largest retailers prospered with more than 80 per cent of the top 250 posting an increase in retail revenue.
Wal-Mart topped the list with revenue of $US446.95 billion ($A424.92 billion), nearly four times that of second-placed French chain Carrefour's sales of $US113.2 billion ($A107.62 billion).
The top 250 retailers grew revenue by 5.1 per cent to $US4.271 trillion ($A4.06 trillion) in fiscal 2011, building on the previous year's 5.3 per cent growth.
But Deloitte said the bleak economic environment that Australian retailers have endured for years was likely to continue in 2013.
Local sales growth in 2012 could be attributed to interest rate cuts, carbon tax compensation and other government handouts rather than an improved capacity to spend, it said.
Reasons for a lack of improvement in spending included anaemic jobs growth and a weak labour market, volatile consumer confidence and only moderate real wages growth.
The strongest retail conditions are in mining regions such as Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland, but weakest in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, Deloitte said.
The arrival of global retailers Zara and Topshop, and the expansion plans of Ikea and Costco was increasing competition, Deloitte Australia partner David White said.
Australian retailers still hold advantages over foreign companies, including a greater knowledge of the local market, but need a well thought out strategy and response to increased competition, he said.
More global brands would head Australia's way in 2013, with US retail heavyweights Williams Sonoma (Pottery Barn) and Abercrombie & Fitch (Hollister) launching stores in Australia.

Study: 89 percent of parents believe game violence a problem

Common Sense Media survey finds majority of parents nationwide have issues with levels of violence in games; 84 percent took issue with Hitman: Absolution ad.

A new study commissioned by Common Sense Media has found that 89 percent of parents across the United States believe violence in today's video games is a problem. In addition, the survey concluded that 75 percent of parents found it difficult to shield their children from violence in media.
As part of the study, parents were shown a video advertisement (below) for Hitman: Absolution, with 84 percent saying it was inappropriate to show on television during a time when children could see it.
One question asked if parents thought violence in video games could lead to violence in the real world, to which 75 percent responded saying yes, with 17 percent saying no, and 8 percent saying they were not sure.
Another question on the survey asked parents if they thought violence in contemporary video games is a major problem, a minor problem, or not a problem at all. Forty-five said it was a major problem, 44 percent said a minor problem, 8 percent said not a problem at all, and 2 percent were not sure.
Other highlights from the study included 60 percent of parents saying they "very closely" monitor the movies, video games, and music their children listen to with respect to violent content. Additionally, parents surveyed expressed faith in the movie and video game ratings systems, the MPAA and ESRB, respectively, with 68 percent saying the current systems do allow parents to make informed decisions about violent content.
Common Sense Media and the Center for American Progress commissioned the study, which was performed by SurveyUSA on January 4 and January 5. A total of 1,050 parents with a child under the age of 18 living at home participated in the study.
Respondents were selected at random, and all participants heard the questions asked identically. The margin of error for the study ranged by question, scaling from ±1.6 percent to ±3.5 percent.
US Vice President Joe Biden will meet with representatives from the video game industry today in Washington DC as part of a wider task force aimed at examining the role of violent media in mass shootings. The discussion around violent media has been reignited in the wake of the December 14 schoolhouse massacre that left 20 elementary school students and six adults dead in Newtown, Connecticut.

HUGE JELLYFISH SWARMS HIT BRISBANE

In a boat harbour at Wynnum the water is thick with what scientists know as catostylus mosaicus - that's 'blue blubbers' to the rest of us.

Locals told Seven reporters that the water here is normally dark green, but with the large swarm in residence it appears an eery light blue.
There's very little current for the creatures to battle - so they're not expected to move on anytime soon.
"I'm from Scotland," one stunned tourist said, "so we don't see much like this."
Most Australians would no doubt find the sight a little disconcerting as well, but experts say it's nothing to worry about.
"We know that these populations oscillate through time, so you'll have several years where they'll be abundant and several years where they'll be scarce, and what's happening around Australia at the moment is we seem to be at one of these peaks of populations," Dr Kylie Pitt, a marine researcher said.
The jellies have been on quite a journey, with the Gold Coast's erratic king tides pushing them far up Tallebudgera creek before dragging them back to the ocean.

Similar blooms of jellyish appeared in the Gold Coast in Broadwater and areas of Moreton Bay in March last year.

Marine researchers believe it's likely many of the creatures are left over from that event.

The species is normally eaten by fish - but it would likely take several years for the present horde to be consumed.

"Often people find these big blooms of jellyfish and they worry that it is a sign of something out of kilter in the ocean or it's a sign of an unhealthy ocean," said Dr Pitt.
"But we now know that jellyfish are a really important part of the ocean and it's not necessarily a sign of the ocean being degraded or in trouble."

What Did Putin Say To Terrify This Boy?

Russian President Vladimir Putin attended an overnight Mass at a church in Sochi earlier this week in honor of Orthodox Christmas. During the service at Holy Trinity St. George Monastery, Putin knelt down and whispered something to a young boy sitting on the ground near his feet—a tender moment caught by a photographer.
But a photo apparently taken shortly after the exchange shows the wide-eyed boy staring ahead, possibly in fear, shock or bewilderment.
The before-and-after images have led to gleefully sinister speculation on Reddit about what Putin said to the child.
"I'm not Vladimir Putin, the real one is dead," one Reddit user quipped.
"I deleted your Pokemon save file," wrote another.
Others theorized that Putin told the boy the password to the launch codes: "Bosco."
"I killed Santa with my bare hands," Reddit user Resfad wrote.
"If you pick your nose once more I will have it removed," another joked.
"I am your father," several Redditors wrote.
At least one user offered a plausible explanation for the kid's trauma:
"The boy may have been unaware that the president of his country was standing behind him until he knelt down to say hello. I'd probably have the same expression on my face if I was at some random function and Obama kneels next to me."
"Putin didn't say anything," a Reddit user replied. "He merely stole that boy's soul."

Ular sawa 'tumpang' pesawat
